Time has not been kind to Cumae but the Sibyl’s prophecies draw me back. The oldest Greek colony on the Italian peninsula, Cumae is the site of the ill-fated Cumaean Sibyl, the priestess who forgot to mention eternal youth when she bargained with Apollo for eternal life. It was Daniela who first guided me to her cave and placed the parched oak leaves in the palm of my hand. Not wanting to seem unappreciative, I waited until we parted company before throwing them away. It was 1997 and I was still too young to know about Sibylline prophecies.
