Visits to Japan had been in winter with snow on the ground. When walking across the road, during a visit to the Bonsai Village in Omiya, a manhole cover caught my eye. Interestingly, it had a stylised bonsai design. At the time I didn’t realise that it was the beginning of a journey of appreciation of the connection between the designs and attributes of the prefecture.
