The Sandwich Islands

The Sandwich Islands
Single section pamphlet book in box  2018

Food and place are intrinsically connected. Recollections of other places can be elusive, but often you can easily bring to mind every ingredient of a meal you had when you were there. Almost miraculously, the memory of the food triggers details of the place with astonishing clarity: the weather, your mood, snippets of conversation, the music playing. Hawai‘i holds an important place in my life, and not just for its unique culinary offerings. It delights me that it was named The Sandwich Islands by Captain Cook, who, from all reports, was delicious.

Pigment inks, Magnani paper, barkcloth, bookcloth, linen thread

Book measures 340 mm high x 280 mm wide and is housed in a double-walled box covered in duo cloth and lined with Hawaiian barkcloth

The Sandwich Islands is currently touring in Place: a travelling exhibition of artists’ books.
